History

New Meadows is a rural city in Adams County, located in the Meadows Valley on the Little Salmon River.

The city traces its foundation back to around 1910-1911, when the Pacific and Idaho Northern Railroad PIN Railroad was built from Weiser northward and reached close to where New Meadows is today. The railroad depot was built in 1910-1911, and the town was platted in 1910 by the Coeur d'Or Development Company.

Before the railroad, there had been a town called Meadows to the east. But many merchants and buildings gradually moved to be nearer the railroad, and thus New Meadows became the new focal point.

The railroad was originally designed to serve both farm-to-market purposes and, later, the timber industry. Over time, the line north of a certain point was abandoned northern section after the Tamarack sawmill, etc., and the depot ceased functioning as a full railroad station by the 1970S.

New Meadows was incorporated in 1912. Since then, it has maintained a modest growth, rooted in timber, agriculture, ranching, trading, and more recently recreation.

There are some historic landmarks the Pacific & Idaho Northern Railroad Depot, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves now as a cultural/historical site.
