Ranch Description

Camp Phoenix

Camp Phoenix at Nesowadnehunk Lake was the premiere Sporting Camp for wild Maine brook trout fishing from the 1930'S until it was purchased in the 1990'S. The buyers converted the lodge and cabins on the 16 acre site into condominium units so they could spend less time on cutting the grass and more time fly fishing the lake and hiking in Baxter State Park.

The lodge at camp Phoenix is the original cooking, dining, and gathering place for the sports that stayed here. Today you can own this historical lodge and make it your own. The camps eleven rooms consist of over 4,000 square feet of living space. Six bedrooms, two full baths and two half baths will accommodate up to 26 family, friends, and guests.

A large kitchen with commercial grade cook stove adjoins the elegant dining area. A great room with cathedral ceilings is the place to gather and tell stories after dinner and evening fishing. Spend lazy afternoons enjoying the lake and mountain views from the 8 X 100 foot covered screen porch.

The 16 acres surrounding Camp Phoenix are tended by a caretaker. There are common areas including a library building, boat docking and casting pond. This is truly a relaxing place to spend your vacation time.

Nesowadnehunk Lake

Nesowadnehunk Lake is nearly 4 miles long and in places over a mile wide. It is known for its exceptional water quality, wild brook trout, and incredible mountain views. The lake is in the shadows of Strickland and Center Mountains on the western border of Baxter State Park. Fisheries biologist call the lake The Trout Factory. The lake produces healthy populations of brook trout that are from 6-20 in length, with most around 8-12. The trout from this fishery are used by the state fish hatcheries as brood stock for stocking in other waters. The strain of trout from here are particularly hearty.

The lake produces fish throughout the season from ice out until it closes again in the fall. This water is managed as fly fishing only. Working crayfish patterns along the bottom, casting nymph imitations or working a hatch in the early morning or evening hours often reward the fly caster with a take from a hungry brook trout. Peak season for most local fisherman on this lake is during the Hexagenia mayfly hatch in late June to early July.

Anglers searching for live water should visit the outlet stream with classic runs and pools as it wanders through Baxter State Park. Its 15-mile run varies from pools to riffles, falls and flat water. Scenery observed here rivals the Rockies. Trout from 6 to 14 inches are found here. There are frequent caddis and mayfly hatches throughout the fishing season. If you are a trout fisherman, particularly a brook trout fisherman, Nesowadnehunk Lake needs to be on your shortlist of Maine trout waters to visit, and this is an opportunity to own a piece of it.

Baxter State Park

Adjoining the Camp Phoenix property is the natural wonder of Baxter State Park. This 200,000+ acre park was gifted by former Governor Percival Baxter to the people of Maine. The park is home to Mount Katahdin and many other lesser peaks. The trail system in the park accesses Maine's most remote and wild places. Dozens of mountain ponds and alpine lakes are teaming with native trout and wading moose.
