Lake Francis Case attracts more than 1 million visitors each year to its shores. Recreation opportunities around the lake include camping, fishing, hunting, boating, sailing, swimming, skiing, bird-watching and photography. Campgrounds are managed by the State of South Dakota. Amenities include electricity, potable water, modern bathrooms, playground equipment, trailer dump stations and boat ramps. A select few campgrounds also have camping cabins available.

Water/Mineral Rights & Natural Resources

The Missouri River flows for over 4 miles on the western border of the ranch and provides extensive riparian habitat. Other prominent water resources include Peterson Creek traversing the ranch for 1.6 miles, three flowing wells, four ponds, and springs.

Winter days are generally sunny with the coldest month being January with an average high temperature of 32 degrees. Summers consist of warm days and cool evenings. History

Chamberlain, South Dakota, named for a Milwaukee Railroad official, Selah Chamberlain, was incorporated as a city in 1882. Chamberlain is located at the crossroads of Interstate 90 and the majestic Missouri River in south central South Dakota. Because of location, it is often considered the Gateway to the Old West. Currently with a population of 2,387, Chamberlain utilizes a Commission form of government with a mayor and four city commissioners. Chamberlain hosts a vibrant business district, great opportunities for boating, hunting and fishing enthusiasts, an excellent educational system, a first-rate medical facility, recreational facilities for all ages and is surrounded by rich Native American Culture. Francis Case and Fort Randall Dam are located within the rolling plain of the Missouri Plateau, and bordered by rugged bluffs, broken by a complex of eroded canyons and ravines and has become one of the most popular recreation spots in the Great Plains. The lake has an area of 102,000 acres and a maximum depth of 140 feet. Lake Francis Case covers just over 100 miles and has a shoreline of 540 miles. The rolling prairie terrain surrounding The Missouri River is a peaceful paradise for outdoors enthusiasts, while the reservoir itself is home to all kinds of water recreation. Species of fish in the reservoir include walleye, northern pike, sauger, sunfish, yellow perch, common carp, black bullhead, channel catfish and smallmouth bass. The Missouri River cuts through grassy prairie and grain fields that provide habitat for pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, prairie chickens, turkeys and geese. Hunters also pursue big game animals such as white-tailed deer, mule deer and antelope.

The Bird Island Ranch is located 4.7 miles west of Chamberlain, South Dakota from I-90 Exit 265. The Chamberlain Municipal Airport is 5 miles from the ranch and features a 4300 foot runway.
