Two incredible cave systems, Mill Creek and Allie Spring, both gated and locked, add an entirely new dimension to this property. Local folklore states the Pinkerton's chased Jesse James into the right branch of Mill Creek Cave and the branch was dynamited to seal him in. Fifty feet into the right branch there are clear signs of a cave-in however over the years the right branch opening collapse has settled and you can clearly see above and beyond the passage continues. There are subterranean tunnels that could have connected back to the main passage thereby allowing Jesse to escape to live another day and make this claim plausible. Allie Spring Cave is part of an immense cave system which is accessed through a small hole at the base of an escarpment and starts with a 70-yard belly crawl followed by 330 yards of wetsuit swimming in 59F water often up to your neck with a couple of ear dunks along the way until you emerge into the main tube. Over a mile into Allie Spring Cave off one of the branches there is a well-stocked base camp with an emergency cache of first aid supplies and survival gear. Base camp has served host to several overnight camping trips and is only 100 meters short of the Salt Cellar which was named after the incredible pure white lime formations and flow stone. Throughout both caves are probable signs of prehistoric Short Face Cave Bear beds and claw scratches in the clay. The Kansas City Karst Club intensely manages both caves and 2 miles and 3 years into the Allie Spring Cave survey they report their survey work will be ongoing for many years to come if permitted to continue by new owners. The best way to explore Allie Spring Cave for the first time would be to join them on one of their quarterly survey trips.
